Rocket Man, a feature documentary film, directed and produced by Michael Coulson, introduces us to charismatic Quaker pediatrician, Dr. Chris Hansen, the ‘Rocket Man’ – a pediatrician and life-long volunteer, who is haunted by the terrible realization that his latest project, supporting a group of orphaned children in Haiti, may be threatened by failure because of well-intentioned promises that he may not be able to keep.
The little that each of us does each day may not seem like much, but in these times of such sadness, in our country and many other parts of this crazy globe of ours, one little act of love may account for something.
Christian M. Hansen, Jr., M.D.MPH
Shot over a period of 7 years, in the United States and Haiti, Rocket Man tells the story of Chris Hansen’s extraordinary life of service, treating children in crisis spots all over the world. With rarely seen archive footage, verite-style documentary film-making and interviews with family members and seminal figures from the world of social justice, the film provides a moving portrait of a man dedicated to “giving back” others, no matter how difficult or dangerous the task – “right-sharing” as Chris calls it, a personal philosophy derived from his Quaker beliefs. Rocket Man provides a dramatic insight into the triumphs and challenges associated with being a volunteer in the developing world, and shows us the profound effect one person can have when they step forward and try to make difference.
It is hoped that the experience of watching the Rocket Man will act as a catalyst to encourage discussion and debate, particularly among young people. A distribution plan has been drawn up for the film to include entry to film festivals, local community screenings and outreach to schools and colleges.
“This film is a portrait of an extraordinary man who spent his life fighting for social justice, helping sick and undernourished children around the world. Dr. Chris Hansen’s actions, which were an affirmation of his Quaker principles, had a profound effect on the many people with whom he came in contact: his family, his friends, strangers he met in the street, and this filmmaker. Chris believed that we all share a moral obligation to help others less fortunate than ourselves. I hope my film will help communicate this message.” Michael Coulson, Producer and Director of Rocket Man
